Carnegie Hall’s Nuestros Sonidos is a joyous, ongoing celebration of the vibrant sounds, pioneering rhythms, endlessly diverse traditions, and enormous influence of Latin culture in the United States, including vital contributions from the Caribbean. Ytasha explores Afro Latin rhythms in the rhythm section of her book The Afrofuturist Evolution and will be in conversation with musician Leon Q, artist Eddaviel Montero, and graphic novelist Hugo Canuto as a celebration of the book’s release.

Tale of the Orishas is a graphic novel that fuses the practice of Candomble with the Silver Age comic aesthetics of Jack Kirby. Written and illustrated by Hugo Canuto, the comic was originally released in Brazil and the English translation debuted in 2023. Working with both digital and traditional media, Canuto examines the relationships between art, cultures, myths, and religion in Brazil and Latin America. Learn about the making of Tale of the Orishas as Ytasha L.
